Job Summary

Aptive is seeking a full-time UI/UX Designer to develop compelling web interfaces that drive user engagement for multiple federal agencies. The UI/UX Designer combines user research, customer insight and outstanding design creativity to deliver user-friendly online interfaces and experiences. This position requires strong customer interaction skills and a demonstrated ability to work with various stakeholders across multiple tasks.


This mid-level full-time position is remote but has the option to work on site in Alexandria, VA after Covid-19 restrictions are lifted. This is an immediate hire position.

Primary Responsibilities

• Gather and evaluate user requirements in collaboration with clients, strategists and other
key stakeholders
• Conduct user research including stakeholder interviews, usability tests of prototype designs
and functionality and other approaches as needed to ensure that design approaches
resonate with end users
• Effectively translate research findings into actionable strategy and concrete designs
• Create both high-level wireframes demonstrating site functionality and full-color, pixel-
perfect page design comps to be implemented by development teams
• Illustrate design ideas using storyboards, process flows and sitemaps
• Design graphic user interface elements, like menus, tabs and widgets
• Build page navigation buttons and search fields
• Develop UI mockups, wireframes and prototypes that clearly demonstrate site functionality
and overall layout
• Create original graphic design comps (e.g., images, sketches and tables)
• Identify and troubleshoot UX problems (e.g., responsiveness)
• Conduct layout adjustments based on user feedback

Minimum Qualifications

• 3-5 years of experience designing websites, landing pages, mobile applications and other
online interfaces
• Strong familiarity with user research approaches and user experience best practices
• Expertise in modern web design and prototyping tools, e.g., Sketch, Adobe XD, InVision etc.
• Portfolio of recent UI/UX design work (ideally including some public websites viewable
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field
• Ability to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance
• Legal authorization to work in the U.S.

Desired Qualifications

• Front-end web development skills including HTML5/CSS3 etc. a plus
• Familiarity with live prototyping
• Ability to solve an array of challenges using professional, understandable concepts
• Ability to resolve complex issues quickly and work in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving
• Capable self-starter with a drive to get work done with high attention to detail
• Ability to effectively communicate across most mediums and settings
• Strong time management, creativity, and problem-solving skills

Client Information

Aptive serves a variety of federal government agencies, including the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Transportation, the National Science Foundation and the Office of Personnel Management. The UI/UX Designer will work across these and other federal clients to enhance the efficacy and usability of numerous client websites and other online properties.
