Job Summary

Providing Medical Officer (MOD) of the Day Services to the VA Health System. Schedule: 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m., Monday through Friday, including Federal Holidays (24 hours), 24-hour or 48-hour weekend coverage, and any other mutually agreed upon hours. This could include day shifts on holidays, day or evening shifts on weekends, and coverage in Urgent Care (UC).

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Provide inpatient medical care for all bedded programs, including domiciliary, nursing home care units, inpatient psychiatry, and mental health residential program.
  2. Deliver outpatient services in a clinic setting or Urgent Care, evaluating and providing basic care to Nursing Home, Acute Psychiatry, and Residential patients.
  3. Evaluate and provide basic medical care to UC patients when requested, as time permits.
  4. Respond to non-emergent calls and pages within 20 minutes, and to code blues within 5 minutes per policy, facilitating stabilization and hospital admission as necessary.
  5. Coordinate hospitalization and specialty referrals to appropriate VA or community facilities, with emergent care coordinated within the community.
  6. Utilize VA Video Connect (VVC) during off-tours to assist Veterans with medical concerns utilizing video technology.
  7. Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Windows-based operating systems, Microsoft Office software systems, and functional typing/keyboarding skills.
  8. Maintain follow-up after admission and continue to follow-up through the end of each tour, adhering to external regulatory guidelines and requirements.
  9. Accept appropriate stable transfers to the facility, providing verbal and written reports to the Chief of Staff or Chief of Staff Designee prior to completion of each tour.
  10. Notify management of significant events, including deaths on VA property, significant injuries, clinical outcomes, emergency situations affecting Veterans, curtailment of clinical services, and sexual assaults.
  11. Provide timely documentation and workload capture completion for medical records, utilizing the VA computerized medical record system for progress notes, medication orders, and physician orders.
  12. Allow appointed SCVAHCS staff members to observe MOD duties during any MOD tours of duty, coordinated by the assigned Contracting Officer Representative (COR).

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
  2. Certification in specialty area (if applicable).
  3. Minimum of two years of clinical experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
  4. Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills.
  5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  6. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  7. Proficiency in electronic health record systems and other relevant software applications.
  8. Commitment to providing compassionate and patient-centered care.
  9. Knowledge of VA healthcare system policies and procedures preferred.
  10. Flexibility to adapt to varying work schedules and patient care demands.
