Job Summary

Aptive is seeking a Senior Communications Specialist to support communications strategies and services for an IT-related federal client. In this position, you will be responsible supporting content creation, executive messaging and communications planning. Tasks may include leading the planning, initiating, executing, and closing out of small- and large-scale communications campaigns supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs.

     
The candidate must have strong writing, communication and organizational skills. The successful candidate will be proactive with demonstrated success in developing communications and executive messaging strategies while managing multiple, concurrent tasks in a fast-paced, high-visibility environment. The specialist will work directly with senior-level client leadership to develop and execute plans and campaigns. This includes generating strategic recommendations to solve operational challenges, facilitate working sessions with a broad range of stakeholders, and tailoring communications to the audience. Candidate must also have the ability to work and communicate effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.

 

This is a full-time hybrid position in Washington, DC.

Primary Responsibilities

  • 6+ years of relevant experience in writing, strategic communications, outreach, public relations and strategic partnership development.  
  • Master’s degree.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills to include familiarity with AP styles and ability to adapt to specific organizational style conventions rapidly.
  • Ability to deliver clear, compelling communications, both written and verbal.
  • Expert knowledge of the use of digital means to connect and engage is critical.
  • Exceptional people skills and very high EQ, with the ability to collaborate across teams, clients, personalities, and styles.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders and facilitate productive discussions.
  • Ability to communicate thoughts, ideas, and solutions logically, written, graphically and orally.
  • Experience in communicating detailed and technical concepts to a diverse audience.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.  
  • Ability to obtain a public trust clearance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Assist with high-priority communications initiatives such as strategic communications planning, providing strategic, program management, and tactical support. 
  • Execute communications plans.
  • Identify opportunities for the creation of, and lead the development of content in alignment with the communications plans and strategies.
  • Monitor effectiveness of communications.
  • Schedule, attend, and support meetings with senior clients on a regular basis. 
  • Rapidly respond to taskings from senior-level VA leadership responsible for communication planning and reporting. 
  • Lead the development of a wide range of executive level communications, talking points and briefing materials. 
  • Monitor status of deliverables through completion, ensuring on-time delivery and ongoing. reporting of status, risks and timelines. 
  • Collaborate with the team and stakeholders to create and finalize work products. 

Desired Qualifications

  • Proven expertise in strategic communications, public relations, public affairs, research, writing and editing.
  • Proficiency in organizing, communicating information and scheduling and leading meetings with C-suite level stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple moving parts, juggle assignments and make sound decisions.
  • Perform well in team settings and work productively as an individual.
  • Positive and energetic attitude with a strong desire to meet goals, priorities and commitments.
  • Ability to multi-task and work with limited supervision while producing sustainable results under tight deadlines.
  • Self-starter with a drive to accomplish tasks with high attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of written, oral and visual communication to speak and write with clarity and tact at the executive level.
  • Experience supporting large federal agencies, ideally the VA.
  • Experience with SES-level stakeholders and VA Leadership. 
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills, and attention to detail. 
  • Active VA PIV card is a priority.
  • Communication deliverables/samples may be requested.
