Job Summary

The Hospitalist Physician will play a critical role in the comprehensive care of hospitalized medical patients at the Northern Arizona VA Health Care System in Prescott, AZ. This position requires a dedicated professional capable of providing high-quality medical care in a fast-paced environment.

 

6:30am – 7pm and 6:30pm – 7am, including Federal Holidays and rotating weekends during a 40 to 48 hour work week. Position will be on a 7 on/off schedule.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Evaluation, Treatment, and Management: Admit and coordinate all aspects of care for hospitalized medical patients, including admission assessments, appropriate placement within the hospital, evaluation and treatment, ordering and interpretation of diagnostic studies, medication administration, end-of-life discussions, consultations with specialists, discharge planning, and coordination with primary care physicians.

  2. Critical/Acute Care Settings: Provide care to patients in critical/acute care settings in accordance with VA policies. Assess, stabilize, and determine the disposition of inpatients with emergent conditions, including running code teams and rapid response teams.

  3. Procedures: Perform a variety of procedures within the scope of hospitalist medicine, including but not limited to integumentary procedures, local anesthetic procedures, eye procedures, ear procedures, nose procedures, cardiothoracic procedures, gastrointestinal procedures, genitourinary and women's health procedures, musculoskeletal procedures, resuscitation procedures, lumbar punctures, and others as necessary.

  4. Inpatient Admissions: Review all admissions to inpatient hospital care recommended by Mid-level (Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner) providers. Ensure person-to-person hand-offs/handovers from the admitting provider to a responsible member of the admitting team for every admission.

  5. Consultation and Referral Responsibilities: Provide consultation and instruction to referring physicians regarding appropriate indications for procedures. Determine the appropriate course of treatment and communicate with referring clinicians. Initiate appropriate social work referrals for identified homeless veterans and patients without primary care providers.

  6. Medications: Follow all established medication policies and procedures. Ensure no sample medications are provided to patients.

  7. Discharge Education: Provide discharge education and follow-up instructions coordinated with the next care setting for all emergency department patients.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Medical degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Board certification in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine.
  • Active, full, current, and unrestricted license in any State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain appropriate hospital credentials.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong clinical acumen and ability to make sound medical judgments in emergency situations.
  • Commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered care to veterans.
