Job Summary

Aptive Resources is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse to support the Teleoncology Division for the Veterans Health Services. The ideal candidate will have a strong clinical background in oncology, exceptional patient care skills, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative healthcare environment. This position requires a current, unrestricted nursing license, graduation from an accredited nursing program, and relevant certifications.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Utilize broad-based clinical knowledge to assess, implement health promotion and prevention interventions, manage acute and chronic oncology illness states, and assist patients/residents in attaining optimal levels of functioning and rehabilitation.
  • Evaluate patient/resident responses to actual or potential health problems and provide supportive measures for patients/residents undergoing oncology treatments and their significant others.
  • Maintain patient/resident confidentiality and a safe care environment in accordance with The Joint Commission and other VA regulatory bodies.
  • Provide patient/resident-centered care by assessing healthcare needs, developing plans of care, and performing/assigning delegated tasks specific to oncology care.
  • Collect and document pertinent data into the electronic medical record, complete nursing assessments within required time frames, and act on significant changes in patient/resident health conditions.
  • Update patient/resident care plans, notify physicians of changes in condition, and report incidents of abuse immediately to the Nurse Manager or designated nursing leadership.

Duties:

  • Perform head-to-toe assessments and manage intravenous lines for chemotherapy administration.
  • Administer chemotherapy and other oncology-related medications, including managing side effects and adverse reactions.
  • Coordinate and participate in the admission and discharge processes for oncology patients.
  • Measure vital signs and monitor for symptoms of oncology treatment-related complications.
  • Perform wound care, including dressing changes and care of oncology-related surgical sites.
  • Obtain and deliver specimens to the lab, particularly those related to oncology diagnostics.
  • Provide care and support for patients undergoing radiation therapy, including skin care and symptom management.
  • Educate patients/residents and families regarding oncology diagnoses, treatment plans, and medication administration.
  • Respond and assist in oncology-specific emergency situations.
  • Provide clinical oversight to Licensed Practical Nurses, Nursing Assistants, and Health Technicians working in the oncology unit.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current, unrestricted license from a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • Graduate of a professional, accredited nursing school approved by the appropriate State or possession of current, unrestricted license for graduates of foreign nursing schools.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is required for work in acute care, med-surg, or critical care areas.
  • Must have 3 years of outpatient Hematology/Oncology experience.
  • Must have 2 years of Care Coordination/Case Management/Navigation
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and provide compassionate care to veterans.

Desired Qualifications

  • Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN) preferred.
