Job Title: Medical Technologist
Location: Fort Harrison VA Medical Center, 3687 Veterans Drive, Fort Harrison, MT 59636
Work Schedule: 5 days per week, 8 hours per day
Shift Schedule:

  • Day Shifts: 06:00 – 14:30, 07:00 – 15:30, 08:00 – 16:30
  • Evening Shifts: 12:00 – 20:30, 14:00 – 21:30, 14:00 – 22:30
  • Night Shifts: 20:00 – 06:30, 22:00 – 06:30

Laboratory staff must be present during normal business hours as established by the Chief of Laboratory. Hours may be revised as needed for patient care.

Primary Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Medical Technologist will perform clinical laboratory generalist duties across various areas of the laboratory, including but not limited to phlebotomy, urinalysis, coagulation, hematology, immunohematology, blood gases, microbiology, and chemistry. This role requires both manual and automated procedure execution, with a strong emphasis on independent judgment and minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform moderate and complex laboratory analyses on a variety of biological specimens.
  • Develop, perform, evaluate, interpret, and validate laboratory procedures and results.
  • Work in multiple laboratory areas, including Chemistry (endocrinology and toxicology), coagulation, hematology, immunology, immunohematology, blood gases, urinalysis, microbiology, and phlebotomy.
  • Monitor quality control systems and collaborate in patient diagnosis and treatment.
  • Provide education and training for laboratory and healthcare professionals, as well as the public.
  • Engage in direct patient care, estimated at 30% of the time, including the collection of blood and blood products from Veterans.

Minimum Qualifications

Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of one year of clinical laboratory experience required.
  • Ability to perform a variety of testing procedures with precision and attention to detail.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field.

Certification Requirements:

  • Certified by one of the following:
    • American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification or Board of Registry (ASCP)
    • American Medical Technologist (AMT)
    • American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB)
  • Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS).
