Job Title: Medical Technician (Phlebotomist)

Location: VA Bedford Medical Center, 200 Springs Rd., Bedford, MA 01730

Period of Performance: February 1, 2025 – June 25, 2026

Position Summary:

We are seeking skilled and dedicated Medical Technicians (Phlebotomists) to join our team in providing medical technician services to the VA Bedford Medical Center. The successful candidate will provide essential onsite phlebotomy and specimen processing services for eligible Veterans, ensuring the highest standards of care in alignment with Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines.

Primary Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Phlebotomy Services:
    • Perform patient phlebotomy for inpatient ward rounds, outpatient clinics, Emergency Department (ED), and STAT/ASAP/timed draws.
  2. Specimen Processing:
    • Handle sample processing, preparation for send-out, and maintain specimen integrity.
  3. Safety and Accuracy:
    • Positively identify patients before sample collection and verify sample identification before testing or aliquoting.
    • Protect the confidentiality of electronic and paper patient information.
  4. Issue Resolution:
    • Identify, document, and resolve collection, processing, testing, or reporting issues.
  5. Patient-Centered Care:
    • Deliver professional, patient-focused service to ensure a high level of satisfaction among stakeholders and customers.
  6. Technical Proficiency:
    • Work in various lab areas as required, demonstrating flexibility to adapt to the lab's needs.

 

Work Schedule:

  • Dayshift: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.
  • Employees may also be required to work weekends, holidays, and overtime based on patient care needs, but on-call or standby duties will not be required.
  • Shifts will be established and may be revised by the Chief of Staff to ensure optimal patient care.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications:

  1. Experience:
    • Minimum of three (3) years of recent phlebotomy experience.
  2. Skills and Proficiency:
    • Demonstrated technical proficiency in phlebotomy and laboratory processing.
    • Fluent in English (spoken, written, and reading).
