Location: Raymond G. Murphy VAMC 1501 San Pedro Blvds SE Albuquerque, NM 87108

Period of Performance: 12/16/2024 – 12/15/2029

Shift Schedule: Monday through Thursday 06:30-1500 and Friday 07:30-1630. May require night shift on occasion.

 

Position Description: The anesthesiologist will provide exceptional anesthesia care to Veterans across a variety of settings, ensuring adherence to hospital policies and community standards. This role includes pre-operative evaluations, direct anesthesia administration, supervision of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), and active participation in team-based care and educational activities. The anesthesiologist will contribute to the overall mission of excellence in Veteran care through professionalism, technical skill, and a commitment to ongoing learning.

Primary Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • The attending anesthesiologist is charged with delivering the best possible anesthesia care to our Veteran inpatients and outpatients. This care must be delivered in accordance with hospital policy and must meet community standards.
  • The attending anesthesiologist performs pre-operative and pre-procedural anesthetic risk assessment. Evaluation includes obtaining relevant history, performing physical exam, reviewing vital signs, lab values and all other relevant diagnostic studies prior to surgery. Appropriate notes are written in the patient's medical record.
  • The attending anesthesiologist provides direct anesthesia services including the administration of anesthetic agents, performance of procedures including but not limited to
  • peripheral IV placement, arterial catheter placement, central venous catheter placement, and placement of related invasive and non-invasive monitoring devices.
  • The attending anesthesiologist participates in the Anesthesia pre-operative assessment clinic.
  • The attending anesthesiologist supervises CRNAs in provision of anesthesia team care.
  • Anesthesiologist sites of responsibility include providing patient care in the Operating Room, PACU, Intensive Care Unit, Pain Clinic, IR suite, GI suite, and other locations as required.
  • The attending anesthesiologist participates in the Weekend/Holiday/Evening/Night on­ call schedule in a proportion equivalent to other members of that section.
  • The attending anesthesiologist maintains ACLS and BLS certification.
  • The attending anesthesiologist is responsible for providing objective information regarding risks and benefits of relevant anesthetic treatments and securing the informed consent of the patient, legal guardian or next of kin prior to administering said treatments.
  • The attending anesthesiologist performs inpatient and outpatient face-to-face consultations and e-consultations as requested.
  • The attending anesthesiologist works effectively with patients, families, co-workers, and other health care professionals treating them with respect and dignity.
  • The attending anesthesiologist complies with information security policy and procedures.
  • The attending anesthesiologist provides patient care which is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, and chronological maturation needs of the patient. He/she must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patients served within the Surgical Service. The Anesthesiologist must demonstrate the knowledge of the changes associated with aging and diseases process and the ability to provide care based upon age and disease related factors as specified on the competence assessment checklist.
  • The attending anesthesiologist is expected to use the best available procedures and to perform them at or above national statistical levels.
  • The attending anesthesiologist participates in the education and training of nurses, technicians, medical students, residents, fellows, and medical staff as appropriate.
  • The attending anesthesiologist maintains skill in use of the VA electronic medical record.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements: 

  • License to practice medicine in any State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Colombia
  • Board Certified /Board Eligible in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA)
  • Currently certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) (or equivalency)
  • Certified in EHR and CPRS
  • Active and unrestricted DEA
