Job Summary

Job Title: Specialized Emergency Department Nurse

Location: Miami VA Healthcare System (including 7 Community-Based Outpatient Clinics) 

Period of Performance: 03/12/2025 – 03/11/2030

Shift Schedule: Rotating eight (8), ten (10) and twelve-hour (12) tours on rotating day, night, and evening shifts, to include weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

Position Description:

The Emergency Department Registered Nurse (ED RN) plays a critical role in providing high-quality, patient-centered care in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. This position encompasses various units, including the First Encounter Station, Main ED, and ED Annex, each designed to triage, assess, and deliver emergent care tailored to patient needs. The ED RN is responsible for managing patients across a broad spectrum of acute medical, surgical, psychiatric, and trauma conditions, including high-volume cases such as low back pain, chest pain, and essential hypertension, with viral screenings constituting a significant portion of visits.

Primary Responsibilities

Unit Description: First Encounter Station: Station for RN to perform an initial assessment and direct patients to the proper level of care. Main ED: 23 beds, two (2) MHOA rooms, two (2) isolation rooms, a GYN room, a procedure room, four (4) rooms at the ED entrance (former triage/fast track area). This area has a medication room, soiled utility room, supply pyxis room, and a linen room.

ED ANNEX: Current location for fast track. Current location for fast track. There are four (4) recliners. There is a dedicated medication room for the annex. Ambulances are accepted at the discretion of the attending physician. STEMIs, surgical, vascular, trauma, acute psychiatry, and various other emergent medical diagnoses are seen in the ED. The top three diagnoses in the ED are:

  • Low Back Pain
  • Chest Pain
  • Essential Hypertension Currently, the highest volume of ED
  • encounters are screenings for viral disease.

Skills: ED RN shall be responsible for patient triage and assessments, medication administration, performing and assisting with procedures; IV therapy, telemetry monitoring, discharges, external transfers, delegating to assistive personnel, electronic medical record documentation, patient transport, and emergency response procedures. The ED RN manages urgent/emergency care, mental health patients over the broad spectrum of disease and injury. He/she can assess intervenes in urgent and emergent situations to preserve life and limbs as well as manage episodic exacerbations of chronic disease.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements: 

The ED RN must have BLS and ACLS certification, ER/Critical care experience, and ability to function independently in a stressful environment. The personnel assigned by the Contractor to perform the services covered by this task order shall possess an unrestricted license to practice nursing in one of the States, Territories, or Commonwealths of the United States or the District of Columbia.
