Job Summary

The Food Service Worker is responsible for the preparation, service, and handling of food and materials in accordance with federal regulations and local policies. This role ensures that all food safety, quality, and service standards are met while providing an excellent dining experience to customers.

 

Location: CW Young Bill VA Medical Center, 10,000 Bay Pines Boulevard, Bay Pines, FL 33744

Period of Performance: Base months: 2/1/25 – 6/1/25

Compensation: $15.97 per hour

Shift Schedule: One worker per shift

A: 5:00am through 1:30pm, off Wednesdays and Thursdays

B: 5:00am through 1:30pm, off Saturdays and Sundays

C: 5:30am through 2:00pm, off Fridays and Saturdays

D: 5:30am through 2:00pm, off Mondays and Tuesdays

E: 6:00am through 2:30pm, off Wednesdays and Thursdays

F: 11:30am through 8:00pm, off Wednesdays and Thursdays

G: 11:30am through 8:00pm, off Saturdays and Sundays

H: 11:30am through 8:00pm, off Fridays and Saturdays

I: 11:30pm through 8:00pm, off Mondays and Tuesdays

J: 11:30 through 8:00pm, off Wednesdays and Thursdays

Primary Responsibilities

Serving Lines: 

  • Set up and close down serving lines to ensure menu availability during service hours. 
  • Maintain proper food temperatures and perform cross-panning procedures. 
  • Serve food in cafeteria or trayline settings, portion items appropriately, and read tray tickets/documentation. 
  • Assemble and pack carryout meal components for pickup. 

Food Preparation: 

  • Prepare food using techniques like cutting, chopping, washing, portioning, slicing, baking, broiling, boiling, and blending. 
  • Follow standardized recipes and comply with VHA Directive 1439, Healthy Diet Guidelines, and FDA Food Code 2022. 
  • Adhere to supervisor-assigned duties and local policies. 

Subsistence and Materials Management: 

  • Receive, inspect, and store food and materials per FDA Food Code 2022 and VHA standards. 
  • Verify order accuracy, inspect for quality, label, rotate, and store stock properly. 
  • Lift up to 50 pounds and follow mandated handling procedures. 

Sanitation and Cleaning: 

  • Clean and sanitize dining tables, chairs, and benches to maintain availability. 
  • Replenish dining supplies (napkins, condiments, etc.) for customers. 
  • Follow proper cleaning methods and local policies for surface sanitization. 

Compliance: 

  • Adhere to all federal, FDA, VHA, and local policies and procedures to ensure safety and quality standards. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.  
  • Previous experience in food service or a similar environment preferred.  
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently or as part of a team.  
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness.  
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to interact positively with veterans, staff, and visitors.  
  • Physical ability to perform tasks that require prolonged standing, walking, bending, and lifting of heavy items.  
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards.  
  • Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.  
  • Ability to obtain any government required background check.
