Job Summary

Aptive is seeking experienced Sterile Processing Technicians to provide comprehensive sterile processing services to the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center (RMR VAMC) within the Eastern Colorado Health Care System (ECHCS). This critical role supports the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) and ensures the availability of sterilized and high-level disinfected (HLD) reusable medical equipment (RME) for surgical, dental, and other hospital facilities.

VA Business Hours:

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday

  • Positions may require rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments outside standard duty hours. Specific schedules will be determined by the Medical Center at the time of service.
  • Employees must be available to work during any declared holiday or day of service as mandated by executive order of the President of the United States.

Tour of Duty:

  • Shifts will consist of 8-hour work periods, including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break, as workload permits.
  • Employees will receive a 15-minute paid break for every 4 hours worked, in accordance with Department of Labor (DOL) regulations.
  • Overtime may be requested on rare occasions to meet critical operational needs.

Compensation: At the time of requisition creation, the expected pay for this role is between $32 and $34 per hour.

Primary Responsibilities

Decontamination Area

  • Transport contaminated RME from biohazard areas to the decontamination area per standard procedures.
  • Disassemble, clean, decontaminate, and inspect RME following manufacturer's instructions and facility SOPs.
  • Operate decontamination equipment (e.g., washer/disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaners) and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Ensure removal of bioburden using manual and mechanical cleaning processes.
  • Reprocess flexible endoscopes using automated reprocessors.

Preparation and Packaging Area

  • Inspect and assemble instrument sets based on count sheets.
  • Package and prepare instruments for sterilization, ensuring correct sterilization methods are applied.
  • Operate and troubleshoot sterilizers (e.g., steam, gas plasma, AER).
  • Perform quality assurance testing and maintain documentation for sterilization processes.

High-Level Disinfection (HLD) Area

  • Process items requiring HLD according to manufacturer's instructions and facility protocols.
  • Operate and maintain automated endoscope reprocessors and other HLD equipment.
  • Refill or replace chemicals as required.

Case Carts and Sterile Storage Area

  • Prepare case carts for operating rooms based on procedural requirements.
  • Maintain sterile storage areas and rotate stock as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with sterile storage regulations and facility protocols.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Work in decontamination, preparation, and sterile storage areas, often in hot, cold, or dimly lit environments.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods, with frequent bending and lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Wear protective apparel to prevent exposure to biological hazards.
  • Demonstrate dexterity and visual acuity in handling and inspecting surgical instruments and RME.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; relevant post-secondary education preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum two (2) years of recent sterile processing technician experience. Military medical service experience is favorable.
  • Certifications:
    • Valid HSPA or CBSPD certification
    • BLS/ACLS certifications from an AHA-accredited institution
  • Skills:
    • Proficient in aseptic principles and sterilization techniques.
    • Skilled in interpreting technical materials, SOPs, and regulations.
    • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Immunizations: Documentation required for MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap, and tuberculosis screening.
