Job Summary

Medical Technologist / Clinical Laboratory Scientist

Location: Central Alabama Veterans Healthcare System (Montgomery, AL)
Contract Type: Temporary (Full-time, rotating shifts including weekends/holidays as needed)

Schedule

  • 8-hour shifts: day, evening, night, or 7-on/7-off schedules, with rotating weekends and holidays as needed.

Position Summary

The Medical Technologist (MT) / Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) provides comprehensive laboratory testing services, supporting the diagnosis and treatment of patients at CAVHCS. The MT performs as a Generalist, working across all areas of the laboratory including Chemistry, Blood Bank, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis, with preferred experience in Microbiology.

Primary Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory testing in Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Blood Bank, Immunology, Urinalysis, and Microbiology (preferred).
  • Process and analyze specimens, ensuring accurate and timely results.
  • Calibrate instruments, perform quality control procedures, and document activities.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation issues and initiate corrective actions as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with VA, CAP, AABB, FDA, and Joint Commission standards.
  • Document critical results and notify ordering providers according to protocols.
  • Participate in proficiency testing, competency assessments, and QA/QI programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field.
  • Certified as MT, MLS, or CLS by ASCP or AMT.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Generalist Medical Technologist.
  • Experience in Microbiology preferred.
  • Ability to meet VA credentialing and training requirements, including proof of immunizations and negative TB test.
  • Fluent in English (written and verbal).
