Job Title: Medical Technologist (Clinical Laboratory Scientist) – VA Maine Healthcare System

Position Overview:
The Office of Veteran Affairs (VA) Maine Healthcare System is seeking qualified Medical Technologists (Clinical Laboratory Scientists) to provide comprehensive laboratory testing services for eligible VA beneficiaries. These services will be delivered onsite at the Togus VA Medical Center and shall meet or exceed nationally recognized standards established by the Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI).
This role requires flexibility and technical expertise across multiple areas of the clinical laboratory. Personnel may rotate through various departments based on service needs.
Medical Technologists will provide support across multiple lab disciplines, including but not limited to:
Perform routine and specialized chemistry testing on automated instruments (e.g., Abbott Architect ci8200, Abbott Alinity).
Conduct manual tests, QC, and instrument maintenance.
Operate Beckman Coulter Urinalysis systems and other automated/manual equipment.
Perform daily/weekly QC and maintain instrumentation.
Conduct cross-matching, antibody screening/identification, and blood product processing.
Utilize both tube and gel technology methods.
Maintain all QC protocols.
Perform testing on Sysmex, ACL Top, and other platforms.
Execute manual methods and ensure quality control is consistently applied.
Carry out manual and automated microbiological procedures including plating, gram staining, Microscan setup, PCR, and more.
Ensure quality and accuracy of diagnostic results.
Conduct venipuncture and sample collection/processing according to standard protocols.
Perform patient and QC testing under CAP proficiency standards.
Safeguard patient information (both paper and electronic) and adhere to HIPAA and VA guidelines.
Ensure positive patient identification before sample collection or testing.
Promptly identify, document, and resolve collection, processing, testing, and reporting issues.
Maintain high standards of professionalism and patient-centered care to avoid complaints and ensure service excellence.
National Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT, MLS, or CLS) from an accredited certifying body.
Minimum of 3 years of recent experience across the following laboratory disciplines: Chemistry, Urinalysis, Blood Bank, Hematology, Coagulation, and Microbiology.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, follow laboratory protocols, and troubleshoot technical issues.
Commitment to ongoing continuing education and maintenance of certification (documentation required annually).
