The Fresno VA Healthcare System is experiencing a shortage of Medical Supply Technicians (MSTs) and is seeking qualified contract personnel to provide sterile processing services across inpatient units, outpatient clinics, and community living centers.
Sterile Processing Technicians are critical to patient safety, ensuring surgical instruments and reusable medical devices (RMDs) are meticulously cleaned, sterilized, packaged, and ready for use. The contracted MST staff will perform services at a standard equal to or exceeding those in a state-of-the-art civilian medical treatment facility, meeting or surpassing national standards established by AAMI, AORN, FDA, OSHA, and applicable state or federal regulations.
Decontaminate, clean, sterilize, and assemble reusable medical devices (RMDs) and surgical instruments for use in multiple care settings.
Strictly follow AAMI, AORN, FDA, OSHA standards, as well as facility-specific policies, while using appropriate PPE to prevent cross-contamination.
Adhere to Manufacturer’s Instructions for Use (MIFU) for all instruments and equipment.
Operate sterilization and decontamination equipment, including autoclaves, V-Pro, machine washers, and ultrasonics.
Inspect instruments for wear, staining, pitting, cracking, or rust; reassemble and package surgical sets for safe use.
Maintain accurate records of sterilization cycles, maintenance, and quality assurance activities.
Prepare and label packages properly to preserve sterility and ensure surgical readiness.
Support training of new staff on sterile processing procedures and best practices to uphold a high standard of care.
Certification in sterile processing (e.g., CRCST – IAHCSMM or CBSPD) preferred.
Minimum 2 years of recent sterile processing experience required.
Proficiency with sterilization equipment (autoclaves, V-Pro, washers, ultrasonics).
In-depth knowledge of RMD handling, decontamination, sterilization, and assembly practices.
Strong attention to detail, compliance mindset, and commitment to patient safety.
Prior VA or hospital sterile processing experience highly desirable.
