Location: East Orange VA New Jersey Healthcare System – 385 Tremont Avenue, East Orange, NJ 07018
Schedule: Full-time, Onsite | Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM | Flexibility required for after-hours, weekends, and federal holidays as needed
Contract Type: Base Year with Four (4) One-Year Option Periods

Hourly Rate: $110.00/hr plus full time benefits

Position Summary

The East Orange VA New Jersey Healthcare System is seeking a highly skilled and board-certified Therapeutic Medical Physicist to support the Radiation Oncology program. The Medical Physicist will ensure the safe and effective delivery of radiation therapy to veterans, maintaining compliance with VA, ACR, and national safety standards.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in treatment planning, quality assurance (QA), calibration, and safety oversight of radiation therapy technologies, including linear accelerators, imaging systems, and treatment planning platforms.

Work Schedule & Hours

  • VA Business Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.

  • Flexible schedule required to perform calibrations, testing, and measurements after patient treatments, including after-hours, weekends, and federal holidays.

  • Work performed outside of normal business hours must be scheduled in advance with the COR.

Primary Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide onsite support to ensure safe and effective radiation therapy in accordance with TG-142, TG-53, TG-66, and other applicable standards.

  • Perform QA procedures for radiation therapy equipment and maintain compliance with accreditation requirements (ACR/APEx).

  • Conduct calibrations and measurements after patient treatments, as required.

  • Support treatment planning and delivery using advanced modalities: 2D/3D Conformal, SRS, SRT, SBRT, IMRT, and VMAT.

  • Provide expertise in Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), including Cone Beam CT.

  • Ensure compliance with VA rules on clinic wait times, consult completion, and patient access standards.

  • Collaborate with physicians, dosimetrists, therapists, and VA leadership to optimize workflows and patient outcomes.

  • Document and report activities to the Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR) on a monthly basis, including obstacles to performance.

  • Maintain up-to-date continuing education requirements to preserve board certification.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Board Certification: Must be Board Certified in Medical Physics or Therapeutic Medical Physics by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). Certification must be maintained throughout the contract period.

  • Licensure: Must maintain licensure with the Board of Licensure for Professional Medical Physicists, if applicable.

  • Experience (minimum 1 year in each area):

    • QA procedures in a healthcare system with ACR/APEx certification.

    • Varian Linear Accelerators (True Beam) with Brain Lab Accessories.

    • IGRT, including Cone Beam CT.

    • Eclipse treatment planning system and ARIA record & verify system (2D/3D Conformal, SRS, SRT, SBRT, IMRT/VMAT).

    • IMRT QA with MapCheck (or equivalent).

    • Toshiba CT Simulator (or equivalent), following TG-66 standards.

    • Superficial X-ray Machine operations.
