Position Description: The RN will provide specialized care to veterans with complex, acute, and chronic conditions requiring close monitoring and intermediate-level nursing support. The RN delivers evidence-based, patient-centered care, including cardiac monitoring, medication administration, and coordination of multidisciplinary treatment plans. This role emphasizes critical thinking, rapid response to changes in patient condition, and collaboration with physicians and healthcare teams to promote optimal recovery and patient safety.
The Progressive Care Unit Registered Nurse (PCU RN) is responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centered care to veterans requiring intermediate-level monitoring and treatment. Core duties include performing thorough patient assessments, administering and titrating medications, monitoring cardiac and hemodynamic status, and promptly responding to changes in patient condition. The PCU RN ensures accurate documentation in compliance with VA standards, adheres to evidence-based protocols, and collaborates with physicians and allied health professionals to implement individualized care plans. The role also requires maintaining proficiency in advanced technologies such as telemetry, infusion pumps, and electronic medical records, while consistently upholding patient safety and infection control measures.
The scope of care includes patients who are critically ill or whose conditions require the intensive monitoring services of ICU, cardiac and are at risk of needing immediate intensive treatment including COVID and all patients requiring isolation. Treatment/procedures provided in the PCU include, but are not limited to, arterial line monitoring, hemodynamic monitoring, central line monitoring, mechanical ventilation, ECG monitoring and interpretation, gastric lavage, pulse oximetry, pacemaker monitoring, administration of vasoactive intravenous medication, thrombolytic therapy, elective cardioversion, hemodialysis, Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), Intra-Atrial Ballon Pump (IABP) and Swan Ganz catheter monitoring and post-anesthesia recovery as needed.
In addition, the PCU RN plays a vital role in patient education and advocacy, ensuring veterans and their families understand diagnoses, treatment options, and post-discharge care requirements. The nurse actively contributes to interdisciplinary rounds, provides guidance and mentorship to new staff and nursing students, and participates in unit-based quality improvement initiatives.
