Job Summary

Position Title: Medical Specialty Registered Nurse (RN) 

Location: Miami VAMC (Main Campus) 

Work Schedule 

  • Shift: 8:00am – 4:30pm (most clinics); 7:30am – 4:00pm (advanced clinics such as Bronchoscopy or Allergy). 

 Position Overview 

The Medical Specialty Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive outpatient nursing care within specialty clinics, supporting a wide range of services including Dermatology, PM&R, Cardiology, Nephrology, Podiatry, CT/MRI, Neurology, Allergy, Gynecology, Pulmonary, Infectious Disease, Arthritis, Diabetes, Endocrinology, Hematology-Oncology, and Hepatology. The RN collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, Veteran-centered care, ensuring timely assessments, safe procedures, and effective patient education. 

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with specialty care providers in scheduling and providing care to Veterans. 
  • Implement the nursing process, including: 
  • Performing physical and psychosocial assessments. 
  • Completing assessments within required timeframes. 
  • Identifying priority patient needs and planning care accordingly. 
  • Participate in the development, review, and ongoing revision of interdisciplinary care plans. 
  • Perform telephone triage and support access to care. 
  • Prepare patients for injections and minor procedures. 
  • Detect subtle changes in patient condition, anticipate emergencies, and take appropriate action. 
  • Provide individualized patient and family education, including health promotion. 
  • Deliver holistic, Veteran-centered outpatient care and contribute to continuous improvement. 
  • Responsible for: 
  • Patient assessments 
  • Transfers (internal and external) 
  • Documentation in electronic medical records 
  • Delegation to assistive personnel 
  • Patient transport and emergency response procedures 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in a U.S. State, Territory, or the District of Columbia. 
  • Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). 
  • At least three (3) years of experience in an outpatient setting with demonstrated competency in telemetry and acute care.
  • Strong clinical assessment skills, with ability to recognize abnormal findings and respond appropriately. 
    • Effective communication and customer service skills to promote teamwork and patient satisfaction. 
    • Reliable, flexible, and self-directed with strong organizational skills. 
    • Leadership ability to function as a charge nurse/team leader as needed. 
    • Verbal and written proficiency in English. Spanish fluency strongly preferred but not required.
