Job Summary

The Data Engineer plays a pivotal role in the modernization of the Veteran and Family Member Programs (VFMP) by designing, developing, and maintaining scalable data pipelines and integration frameworks that support end-to-end automation and analytics. This position focuses on ensuring seamless data flow between internal VA systems, external data sources, and the new VFMP platform — enabling real-time decision-making, automated workflows, and improved user experiences for Veterans, beneficiaries, and providers. The Data Engineer will leverage modern data engineering practices, cloud platforms, and advanced analytics tools to support VFMP’s mission of delivering timely, accurate, and high-quality healthcare benefits worldwide.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design and build robust data pipelines and ETL processes to ingest, cleanse, transform, and integrate data from multiple internal and external sources.
  • Develop data models and architectures to support real-time decision-making, automation, and analytics within VFMP’s modernization platform.
  • Collaborate with software developers, business analysts, and data scientists to deliver scalable solutions for eligibility, claims, appeals, and provider data.
  • Ensure compliance with data governance, security, and privacy regulations, including HIPAA and federal information security standards.
  • Optimize data infrastructure for performance, scalability, and reliability across on-premise and cloud environments.
  • Support integration of AI and machine learning solutions, including provider mapping, automated eligibility determinations, and predictive analytics.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for data processes, standards, and system integrations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience designing and implementing large-scale data solutions in healthcare, government, or enterprise environments.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL, Python, and data pipeline tools (e.g., Apache Spark, Airflow, Data Factory).
  • Experience with cloud data platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and data warehouse technologies.
  • Deep understanding of ETL/ELT, API integration, and real-time data streaming.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in data engineering, data science, or information systems.
  • Experience with VA data systems (VES, CP&E, VBMS, etc.) or healthcare interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR, X12).
  • Familiarity with analytics tools (Power BI, Databricks, Tableau) and machine learning integration.
  • Experience supporting federal modernization projects or large-scale healthcare data platforms
