Location: Harlingen VA Health Care Center: 2106 Treasure Hills Boulevard; Harlingen, TX 78550-8736

Shift: 8:00am-4:30pm Monday-Friday. No calls or weekends.

Patient Volume: 5-10 patients per day (subject to change)

 

General Description

 

The Gastroenterology Staff Physician provides comprehensive care for patients who have illnesses within the scope of Gastroenterology, with an additional focus on patients with hepatitis. In addition to patient care, the physician may have responsibilities in other areas such as education and research. The Gastroenterology Staff Physician will be located at the Health Care Center (HCC), Ambulatory Surgery Center in Harlingen, Texas.

Primary Responsibilities

The Gastroenterology Staff Physician is responsible for providing primary, secondary, and tertiary gastroenterology care in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Identifying patients' health problems and designing diagnostic and therapeutic plans to meet these needs.
  • Coordinating activities of other health service personnel, resolving problems affecting patient care and providing appropriate education for the patient/family members regarding the patient's care, patient's illness and its management.

A major portion of the physician’s time will be devoted to direct patient care. Additional time will be allocated for administrative, educational, and research duties, as appropriate.

 

Clinical Procedures

 

The Gastroenterology Staff Physician is expected to be proficient in diagnostic and therapeutic gastroenterology procedures, which may include:

  • Upper GI endoscopy (esophagogastroduodenoscopy)
  • Colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
  • Polypectomy
  • Small bowel biopsy
  • Liver biopsy
  • Esophageal dilation (bougie or balloon)
  • Esophageal motility studies
  • Laparoscopy (peritoneoscopy)
  • Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG)
  • Laser photocoagulation of vessels
  • Laser tumor ablation
  • Gastric lavage and cytology
  • Sclerotherapy of esophageal varices
  • Esophageal band ligation of varices
  • Endoscopic ultrasonography, with or without fine-needle aspiration biopsy
  • Placement of esophageal stents

Age-Specific Competencies

 

The incumbent must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care appropriate to the age and developmental level of the patients served. This includes the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s cognitive, emotional, and chronological status and to interpret information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to age-specific needs and provide the appropriate care.

The Gastroenterology Staff Physician provides care to:

  • Young adults (ages 18–40)
  • Middle-aged adults (ages 41–65)
  • Older adults (ages 66 and older)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited U.S. medical school.
  • Current, unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. State, Territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Eligibility for federal DEA registration.
  • Demonstrates skill in providing gastroenterology patient care and in coordinating multidisciplinary care teams.
  • Ability to effectively teach and mentor medical students, residents, fellows, and allied health professionals.

Desired Qualifications

  • At least three to five years of Gastroenterologist experience, preferably in VA or the Department of Defense.
  • Advanced skills to provide a full range of Gastroenterology evaluations to determine the type of degree of illnesses within the Gastroenterology scope.
  • Fellowship Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine (Residency).
  • Prior research experience or scholarly activity is desirable.
