Compensation: Starting at 300,000k; salary is negotiable pending years of experience. Prior experience covering call (Emergency Department response) and clinic is a plus.
The Contractor shall furnish qualified Ophthalmology physician personnel to provide onsite ophthalmology services to eligible beneficiaries of the Department of Veterans Affairs at the Columbia VA Medical Center. Services shall encompass the full range of ophthalmologic care consistent with that provided in a state-of-the-art civilian medical treatment facility. The standard of care must meet or exceed nationally recognized standards established by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO).
This position supports both clinical and surgical ophthalmology services, including subspecialty care as applicable, and includes on-call responsibilities to ensure continuity of patient care.
Monday–Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Contractor physicians must be present and available in clinic during established VA business hours, as determined by the Chief of Staff and subject to revision based on patient care needs.
Rotating on-call coverage among providers
Minimum of one week per month, including weekends
Coverage required during evenings, weekends, holidays, and other times when the clinic is closed
Availability for phone consultation at all times
Must be reachable by phone within 15 minutes
Must be able to report on-site within 60 minutes when required
Provide comprehensive ophthalmology care within scope of practice and privileging.
Deliver clinic-based and surgical ophthalmology services, including subspecialty glaucoma and oculoplastic care as applicable.
Conduct inpatient bedside consultations for non-ambulatory patients and outpatient clinic consults for ambulatory patients.
Ensure procedures are scheduled for completion within 30 days of consultation.
Arrive on time for all scheduled clinics and surgeries, as documented by physical presence.
Follow all VA medication policies and procedures.
No sample medications may be provided.
Provide coordinated discharge education and follow-up instructions for all ophthalmology patients.
Ensure mechanisms are in place for communicating test results in accordance with VHA Directive 1088.
Approximately 5% of time allocated to administrative duties.
Participate in continuous quality improvement activities.
Attend quality improvement, committee, and staff meetings as required by the Chief of Service, Chief of Staff, or designee.
Communicate scheduling conflicts to the Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR).
Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
Physicians with any history of restricted, suspended, revoked, denied, or surrendered licenses will not be considered.
Board Certified or Board Eligible by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO).
Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency in ophthalmology.
Completion of an approved fellowship if providing subspecialty care (e.g., glaucoma).
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification or equivalent.
All continuing medical education required to maintain certification must be current.
Annual verification of certifications must be provided to the VA COR.
