The General Surgeon will provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient surgical care to eligible Veterans at the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center. Services must meet or exceed nationally recognized standards of care consistent with the American Board of Surgery (ABS), The Joint Commission (TJC), and VA clinical guidelines.
This is a non-personal services role providing direct patient care within a full-scope VA surgical program.
Clinic/OR Hours: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Federal holidays observed
No outpatient clinics or surgeries scheduled on VA holidays
The General Surgeon will be responsible for providing comprehensive surgical care, including but not limited to:
Perform general surgical procedures consistent with hospital privileges
Conduct inpatient and outpatient consultations
Provide pre-operative, operative, and post-operative care
Participate in operating room cases as scheduled
Communicate diagnostic results in accordance with VA policies
Provide discharge education and follow-up instructions
Adhere to all VA medication policies (no sample medications)
Participate in Quality Assurance / Quality Improvement activities
Attend required service, surgical, and medical staff meetings
Complete OPPE/FPPE documentation
Maintain accurate and timely medical documentation in the VA EHR
Timely consult completion in accordance with VA access standards
Compliance with patient safety, infection control, and risk management protocols
Documentation of all care in the VA electronic health record system
MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school
Completion of an ACGME-accredited General Surgery residency
Board Certified or Board Eligible by the American Board of Surgery (ABS)
Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state or territory
No history of license restriction, suspension, revocation, or surrender
Basic Life Support (BLS)
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Demonstrated competency in general surgical procedures
Proficiency in electronic health record systems
Ability to communicate effectively in English (verbal and written)
Strong clinical judgment and professionalism
Must successfully complete VA credentialing and privileging prior to start
Maintain required CME for ongoing certification
Comply with VA mandatory training, immunization, and infection control requirements
Contractor-provided physician
Not a VA employee
Must maintain professional liability insurance
