Location

VA Boston Healthcare System (VABHS)
West Roxbury Campus – Boston, MA Metro Area

 

Hours: Days: 8hr shifts available; Second Shift (Swing) - Mix of 8hr shifts and 10hrshifts. Nights - Mostly 12hr shifts

 

Compensation: 32/hr-38/hr pending shift allotment 

Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Technician (Clinical Laboratory Scientist) provides on-site clinical laboratory services to beneficiaries of the Department of Veterans Affairs at the VA Boston Healthcare System. The technician supports diagnostic and treatment decisions by performing laboratory testing in accordance with VA policies, CLIA standards, and the Performance Work Statement (PWS).

Primary Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical laboratory testing in assigned laboratory sections in accordance with established procedures

  • Accurately analyze, verify, and report laboratory test results

  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment

  • Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, VA, and laboratory quality assurance standards

  • Follow infection control, patient safety, and information security protocols

  • Maintain accurate documentation and records in VA laboratory systems

  • Participate in quality control, proficiency testing, and performance improvement activities

  • Communicate effectively with clinical staff regarding test results and laboratory issues

  • Protect patient privacy and confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and VA regulations

Labratory Duties Including but not limited:

Chemistry

The employee will perform routine chemistry testing using automated instrumentation, including Abbott Architect ci8200, Abbott Alinity, Advanced Instruments Osmos, Polymedco OC80, and manual chemistry methods. Responsibilities include routine daily and weekly quality control and instrument maintenance.

Urinalysis

The employee will perform routine chemistry and urinalysis testing using automated instrumentation, including Beckman Coulter Urinalysis systems, Advanced Instruments Osmos, Polymedco OC80, and manual urinalysis and chemistry methods. Duties include routine daily and weekly quality control and instrument maintenance.

Blood Bank

The employee will perform routine blood bank functions, including crossmatching, antibody screening and identification, selected cell panels, and processing blood and blood products for weekly issue or emergency requests. Responsibilities also include routine daily and weekly quality control procedures using tube and gel technology.

Hematology and Coagulation

The employee will perform routine hematology and coagulation testing using automated instrumentation, including Sysmex, ACL Top, Alcor iSed, and manual hematology and coagulation methods. Duties include routine daily and weekly quality control and instrument maintenance.

Microbiology

The employee will perform routine microbiology testing using both manual and automated methods. Duties include plating, Gram staining, reading and subculturing plates, Microscan setup, PCR testing, and other routine microbiology procedures.

Quality and Proficiency Testing

The employee will perform patient and quality control testing in accordance with established protocols and actively participate in the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Proficiency Testing Program.

Documentation and Reporting

The employee will independently test, evaluate, document, and report patient testing and quality control results. The employee will identify, document, and resolve any issues related to specimen collection, processing, testing, or reporting

Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum three (3) years of recent experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Scientist

  • Must be ASCP or AMT Certified 
  • BLS AHA
  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in a biological or chemical science, or a closely related field.
  • Education and training consistent with laboratory testing responsibilities

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English fluently

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently in a clinical laboratory environment
