Primary Location: 2400 Hospital Road, Tuskegee, AL 36083
Additional coverage sites may include Montgomery, Dothan, Fort Rucker, Monroeville (AL) and Columbus (GA).
Work Schedule & Hours
Regular Hours: Monday-Friday 8am-5pm with rotating nightly and weekend call among a large group of providers
On-Call Hours: Approximately 7,466 hours annually (shared among a pool of 8 providers)
Position Summary
The Psychiatrist will provide comprehensive onsite psychiatric physician services to eligible Veterans at the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System. Services must meet or exceed nationally recognized standards established by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) and adhere to all applicable VA policies and directives.
Direct patient care comprises approximately 90% of duties.
Collaborate with VA Mental Health staff in inpatient settings
Evaluate, admit, diagnose, and treat psychiatric patients
Develop and manage treatment plans
Manage care through discharge or transfer
Provide timely and complete medical record documentation
Evaluate new patient referrals
Treat severely mentally ill patients
Provide evaluation and disposition E-consults
Conduct post-discharge follow-up
Ensure patients are seen within 30 days when required
Daily Clinical Workload Expectations:
6–6.5 bookable patient hours per day
Approximately 6 one-hour patients OR 12 half-hour patients per day
Provide on-call coverage during nights, weekends, and holidays
Must be available by phone within 15 minutes
Must be available onsite within 60 minutes when required
Federal holidays observed by VA include major national holidays.
Provide education and supervision to Health Professions Trainees (HPTs)
Maintain compliance with VA Office of Academic Affiliations guidelines
Oversee trainee documentation and clinical encounters
Perform required evaluations of trainees
The Psychiatrist must comply with:
ABPN standards
Joint Commission standards
VA Privacy Act, HIPAA, and medical records directives
All documentation must meet VA Health Information Management standards.
Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry
Valid, unrestricted medical license
Active DEA registration
National Provider Identifier (NPI)
Eligible for VA credentialing and privileging
