Interventional Radiology (IR) Physician

Position Summary

The Interventional Radiology (IR) Physician provides on-site, high-quality diagnostic and minimally invasive image-guided procedures in accordance with established clinical standards. Services are delivered in a VA medical center setting and must meet or exceed national standards of care, including those established by the American College of Radiology (ACR), The Joint Commission (TJC), and other governing bodies.

 

Coverage & Scheduling

  • Provide on-site coverage during standard operating hours (typically Monday–Friday). The normal facility hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., CT, except for all Federal holidays.
    Clinic or OR Schedule: 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m
  • Participate in on-call coverage and respond to urgent cases as required.
  • Ensure continuity of care, including coverage during absences or staffing gaps.

Clinical Duties

  • Perform a full range of interventional radiology procedures in a state-of-the-art clinical setting.
  • Provide timely, on-site patient care during scheduled clinic hours.
  • Review consults, imaging orders, and upcoming cases daily (minimum two hours/day).
  • Conduct pre-procedure assessments, intra-procedural care, and post-procedure follow-up.
  • Communicate test results and treatment plans to referring providers and patients in accordance with VA directives.
  • Provide discharge instructions and coordinate follow-up care for patients.

Consultation & Care Coordination

  • Provide expert consultation to referring physicians regarding appropriate interventional procedures and treatment pathways.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Determine appropriate courses of treatment and communicate recommendations effectively.

Administrative & Quality Responsibilities

  • Participate in Quality Assurance (QA) and Performance Improvement (PI) initiatives.
  • Attend required meetings (e.g., QA/PI, Tumor Board, IR lecture series, staff meetings).
  • Perform peer reviews (approximately 2 hours per month).
  • Complete all required clinical documentation, including procedure outcomes and complications.

Patient Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to all infection control, patient safety, and medication management protocols.
  • Report patient safety incidents within 24 hours using the VA Patient Safety Reporting System.
  • Ensure full compliance with HIPAA, Privacy Act, and VA confidentiality requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Interventional Radiology.
  • Active, unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state or territory.
  • Current ACLS and BLS certifications.
  • Completion of required Continuing Medical Education (CME) and credentialing requirements

Additional Requirements

  • Maintain current licensure, certifications, and training at all times.
  • Complete all mandatory VA training (e.g., privacy, security, infection control).
  • Comply with all VA Medical Staff Bylaws and facility policies.
  • Meet all occupational health and immunization requirements prior to assignment.
