Position Summary

Aptive Resources is seeking a Data Modeler / SQL Database Developer to support the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Office of Research and Development (ORD), Health Systems Research (HSR), and the Center for Information Dissemination and Education Resources (CIDER).

The Data Modeler will provide hands-on technical support for a large Microsoft SQL relational database used to support research administration, compliance activities, data collection, reporting, information dissemination, and operational and leadership requests. The position requires someone who can both maintain a production database environment and work directly with program stakeholders to translate business and reporting needs into reliable database solutions. The underlying HSR system is a SQL relational database accessed through a secure VA intranet environment.

Primary Responsibilities

The Data Modeler will:

  • Administer and maintain large Microsoft SQL Server relational databases.
  • Design, create, modify, and manage SQL tables, schemas, and database structures.
  • Develop, execute, maintain, and optimize stored procedures, queries, scripts, and utilities.
  • Develop and modify SQL reports supporting recurring and ad hoc reporting requirements.
  • Manage and monitor automated SQL Server jobs and scheduling.
  • Monitor database performance, reliability, integrity, and availability.
  • Support database backup, recovery, permissions, access controls, and security.
  • Troubleshoot database, server, application, and data-related issues.
  • Implement new database and application specifications and modify existing solutions as requirements evolve.
  • Coordinate with Web Developers on implementation, integration, testing, and debugging of web-based applications.
  • Respond quickly to reported problems, system alerts, and priority requests.
  • Provide technical recommendations to the Program Director and other HSR/ORD research leaders and managers.
  • Develop and maintain clear technical documentation.
  • Support ad hoc technical projects and special requests.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 4–5 years of SQL database administration and programming experience.
  • 3–5 years of experience developing complex database operations, queries, and scripts.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server database administration and related products.
  • Experience with database design and technical documentation.
  • Experience supporting database backup, recovery, security, and data integrity.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical issues and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
  • Experience with Microsoft Access.
  • Working knowledge of web development technologies such as HTML, JavaScript, ColdFusion/CFML, Java, XML, and OLAP.
  • Experience supporting web applications backed by Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Previous experience supporting VA, VHA, federal health, or healthcare research environments.
